Questions

What families ask first

How old does a student have to be?

Students can join from age 4. There is a group for ages 4 to 6, one for ages 7 to 12, a teen class and adult classes. Children 6 and up can also join a family class with an adult.

Can I watch a class?

Yes. Parents and family can watch any class from the bench by the window. For belt tests, please stay seated and keep the flash off.

What do we wear to the first class?

A plain t-shirt and loose pants. We have uniforms to borrow that day. No jewelry, hair tied back and shoes off at the mat.

What is a class like?

Students line up by belt color, bow in and warm up, then practice stances, blocks, kicks and forms. Partner drills are on pads, and class ends with a bow out.

Can adults and children train together?

Yes, in the practice-together classes on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. The other classes are by age.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. Every class starts with a warm-up, and each student moves at their own pace.

How do belts work?

A student tests for the next belt when the instructor sees the skills.

How does tuition work, and how do I stop?

Tuition depends on the program, the classes a week and whether a family enrolls together. To end enrollment, tell us in writing 30 days ahead.

What happens if we miss a class?

Tell the front desk and we'll find a make-up in another class for the same age group during the session.

Do students have to compete?

No. Keiko is a school for learning karate together. Students who are curious about tournaments can ask an instructor.

Still have a question?

Call the front desk or send us a message and we'll reply.
